How do we fix this? Part 3

How do we fix this? Part 3
This is part 4 of 4 all of which are inspiring and collectively important.

Apart from apathy ...'Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.' (Dr. Martin Luther King)

You may say what does Nevada have to do with me? Well ...for one ...top leadership in Washington which does affect you ...comes from Nevada. For another ...Nevada is the worst of a growing problem in the United States with the same kind of leadership we find in Nevada ...negatively affecting America's future.

Through no fault of their own the education of Nevada's children has been thrown under the bus for far too long.

Where it comes to the worst of the worst, education at the top of the list ...Nevada out ranks the nation, developed and developing nations combined.

Our approach is from a non-denominational, non-partisan global perspective not associated with any political, cultural, or religious organization or ideology.

Every child regardless of cultural background or financial means is an asset for America's future ...not a political football nor should be prejudiced or impeded from a complete education in any way due to circumstances being from no fault of their own.

At the risk of our own national security our nation's ranking and productivity (over years ...Nevada being consistently at the bottom of states' rankings) has fallen to the extent that developing countries are beginning to pass us by.

Good chemistry: Creating more scientists in Maryland
By Karla Murthy February 11, 2011

'Here’s a quote from a presidential commission on the state of our education:

What was unimaginable a generation ago has begun to occur–others are matching and surpassing our educational attainments.” That commission released its report in 1983. The report was called “A Nation at Risk ”. So here we are nearly 30 years later and not much has changed. The United States ranks 27th among developed nations in the proportion of college graduates with degrees in science or engineering. Two-thirds of all college students who begin as science and engineering majors don’t complete that degree. So how can we change that figure? We found one university where they’ve come up with an answer to that question.

Alison Stewart visited the University of Maryland Baltimore County to find out how that school is turning more college students into scientists.'

Nevada's education crisis is not without its reasons ...budget cuts are looming over education in many states.

However, as many people even developing countries are finding affective ways to improve education despite a lack of financial resources, these posts with videos provide a basis for proven alternatives with exceptional but replicable results.

If Nevada wants their education as badly as others who are passing us by ...it will happen even in the lean times.

The darker side of Nevada education however, isn't the current budget crisis ...but why Nevada ranks in the pits now year after year for so many years.

Reform as demonstrated in the video above and in the previous two parts of this '2011: Nevada Education So ...How do we fix this?' series must be holistic.

Its All About Choice

Everyone on the planet has personal responsibility in determining how and where they deal with current events and where they find themselves at the end of it all.

The joke is going to be on those who insist on business as usual and looking for answers in all the wrong places or believe they already have the answers.

There are winning choices we can make.

As to education, if there's a will there's a way!

With a little common sense, if State elected officials and employees paid for by the People of Nevada can't get the job done, then the People of Nevada can do it by applying the principles proven to work on the videos in the previous posts. .

Your constructive comments on this post will help take us to the next level.

'The challenge is to get sheep to quit thinking and acting like sheep and start thinking and acting like foxes ...and time is running out.'

Watch out that no one deceives you! Matthew 24

3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist; 2 Timothy 4, 3-5

Even the 'religious' cling to their religion rather than God ...but, when all else is failing as it is right now ...God says:

'If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.'
2 Chronicles 7:14

To Decision Makers

Even under extreme circumstances and minimal resources ...through rethinking and working together ...if education is important enough to the stakeholders ...anything is possible.

As we stated in So, How Do we Fix This? Part 1 'Nevada education and elected officials talk ...candidates pitch and students rally ...but where the rubber meets the road ...if no one will make the effort to even get to first base ...nothing in Nevada will ever change.'

Making A Difference

Need To Know's Alison Stewart sat down with three education reformers who are making change from the ground up.

Dr. Pedro Noguera is a professor of education at New York University and also spent five years teaching in public schools in California and Rhode Island. Zakiyah Ansari is a mother of eight children and parent leader at the Coalition for Educational Justice in New York City. And Dr. Susan Szachowicz is the principal of Brockton High School and helped spearhead the literacy initiative that turned it from a failing school into a national model.

In this wide-ranging roundtable discussion, these reformers share their thoughts on the big issues in American education today, including the state of physical education in schools, the role of teachers’ unions, providing adequate social services for students, the pros and cons of charter schools, and race and education.

Nevada education and elected officials talk ...candidates pitch and students rally ...but where the rubber meets the road ...if no one will make the effort to even get to first base ...nothing in Nevada will ever change.

We have been trying to connect with anyone and everyone in Nevada who has a true interest in making a real and lasting difference in Nevada eduction with little to no response ...at this point we're just trying to find a pulse.

Not discounting students' efforts to organize and protest against current budget cuts in hopes of making a difference in the current crisis ...the truth remains Nevada has been at the bottom in national ranking for education and amongst the highest in the nation for dropouts and other social issues for at least a generation.

With pending education cuts and endless rhetoric in Carson City about the need for education reform ...its not rocket science to see through Nevada elected officials' track record and allegiances that Nevada's youth and education isn't the priority they say it is ...or efforts beyond rhetoric would be made.

In A Perfect World

Without question, in a perfect world, substantial financial resources if not simply adequate to cover costs of educating Nevada students would be ideal.

Nevada faces real budget problems ...but in the midst of the problems there are solutions.

This post (the first of a series) is about exceptions and overcoming the challenges.

The video below provides some real answers to Nevada's education and budget problem. The REAL problem is doing something about it.

Though not always on the front lines on many of the issues affecting the people of Nevada and America, The Endrun Project works behind the scenes focusing on research for badly needed solutions for root causes affecting America's security and future.

Reality Check

Rather than endless political rhetoric that leads to nowhere, to arrive at solutions to problems ...there must be a clear understanding of the
causes as discussed in 'About The Endrun Project and Mission':

  • Identifying and understanding root causes resulting in society's moral and economic decline,
  • To identify common ground and promote peaceful and constructive coexistence amongst all Americans as a united nation despite religious, political, or cultural differences,
  • To inspire individual and collective responsibility and ownership for America's future,
  • To break generations of behavior cycles leading to America's decline (including apathy and permissiveness toward ineptitude and corruption in state and federal governments),
  • To revitalize American productivity and strengthen America's national and economic security,

It Is What It Is

In the midst of crisis' as states from California to the east coast struggle to cut budgets, education is in the cross-hairs in many states.

Newly elected Governor, Brian Sandoval of Nevada is one of many state's leaders straddled with the burden of lacking resources proposing cuts in education spending.

But unlike many states facing economic hard times, problems with education and social dysfunction have been a hallmark of Nevada for years.

As Nevadans know, for all its glitz ...statistically, Nevada ranks either the lowest or the highest in states' ratings ...the highest of course in the negative things ...the lowest for anything good.

Politicians and pundits talk about education reforms for Nevada term after term, election after election with no results beyond more of the same ...actually not even more of the same ...but a little worse year after year.

As part of newly elected Brian Sandoval's effort to bring Nevada's budget deficit in line without raising taxes as promised ... (despite pathetic rankings and growing needs), a proposed 9% spending reduction on education in Nevada deals another blow to Nevada's future ... Nevada's youth ...only if nothing is done about it.

Notwithstanding, having the worst of national rankings, Nevada has some of the sharpest analysts addressing these issues affecting Nevada. However, as the numbers prove ...discussion and speculation without action doesn't arrive at solutions.

While changes through education in Africa and developing nations are taking place ...Obama, Nevada's leaders, legislators and 'all the king's horses and all the king's men' (as The Endrun Project affectionately refers to) endlessly talk about the decline in America's education and
education reform ...

...but for the sake of America and Nevada's future ...instead of kicking the can further down the road its time to end the nonsense.

So ...How do we fix this?

Everyone in Nevada is a stakeholder. Regardless of resources, no one has an excuse for not doing what is already being done.

Its going to require everyone working together to do this ...but working with only what Nevada and Nevada educators now have to work with as funding may never get better.

While everyone looks for a silver bullet to solve the budget crisis, we stumbled into a cost effective solution you must see that leaves no one with further excuse for turning not only Nevada education around ...but how we do things in Carson City, as well as city, and county governments in the best interest of the People of Nevada.

We want to take this to the next level and want to hear from you.

School of thought in Brockton, Mass.
By Karla Murthy and Sam Weber February 3, 2011

Dr. Susan Szachowicz, Brockton’s principal, says, “I think the concept of ‘turnaround’ is one of the most deceptive words that you can use. Because it implies people from the outside leaping into the school to turn everything around … We did not fire all the teachers. We did work with a team that we had. And we had some pretty dramatic results.

This is only one of many problems in Nevada that can be fixed with common sense.

If State officials elected and paid for by the People of Nevada can't get the job done, then the People of Nevada can do it by applying the principles proven to work in the video.
